Accomplish Goals Like Eren Yeager

Eren Yeager is the main character from Attack On Titan (AOT) and transformed from an innocent little kid to an unstoppable monster.

Eren has a simple 3 step framework to achieve any goal he sets his mind to. I found this framework from “Above Will” on YouTube and thought I would share it with you.

1. Your Why

I want to take you back to the very first season of AOT, where Armin shows Eren a book about the outside world.

This is one of the most significant scenes in the entire show, as it brings to the surface Erens “why”.

Freedom.

Every moment after this point, Eren’s actions are influenced by his "why," freedom. This becomes Eren’s main value throughout the rest of the show.

Without a value, you won’t know what you want to achieve. You will be running all over the place doing mindless things and never actually accomplish anything.

That is why having a value is key.

To find your value, you need to start asking "Why?".

Why do you want what you want?

Then answer.

An example of Eren’s response would be:

“Why do I want to join the Survey Corps?”

“Because I want to see the outside world.”

Keep asking why, why, why, why, why. And you will eventually work your way down to your core value/belief.

2. Locus Of Control

Locus of control is when you have self-accountability and believe that what happens is a result of your actions.

For example: Let's say there's a test in your class. If you fail it and blame something else like the teacher or the test itself, that would be an external locus of control.

While Eren takes this test and also fails, he blames himself entirely, saying that "I am not smart enough."

Eren shows this in the first episode when he isn't strong enough to save his own mother.

Erens early faliure becomes a driving factor to push him towards his goal of getting stronger so that something like that never happens again.

Keep in mind that one person can have complete external nor internal locus of control. In real life somethings are out of our control but you have to do your best to make decisions that you won’t regret and will advance your values.

3. Self Efficacy

The belief of one's capability to succeed in a specific situation.

The more belief you have in yourself to affect the outcome of a situation, the more likely you will significantly affect it.

Whenever you successfully do a task over and over again, it will reinforce your belief that you can make it happen.

Over time, Eren builds belief in his capabilities through hardships like mastering the ODM gear or fighting the Armored Titan.

Even the small success at the start of his journey helped build up his self-belief to keep tackling bigger and bigger hardships.

Takeaways

When achieving your goals, it is important to always have a value before anything as that's what drives your decision-making.

Become accountable in your actions; if something bad happens, even if it is out of your control, still examine what you could have done better.

Lastly, take on challenges one by one to further your self-belief in achieving goals.
